IAD started off as a Facebook group. When the group grew rapidly, there was a demand from the group members to do something more than just have a presence on Social Media. Around December 2016, a meeting was called of Group members and some group members met at Dadar on 8th January 2017 in Mumbai to chalk out a future course of action. The group membership at that point in time on Facebook was about 35,000 members.

Over the ensuing months the group membership has grown to more than 91,000+ (as on 08.08.2017) members on Facebook.

The group started off as a source of news and views on the Narendra Modi Government decision of demonetization of 500 and 1000 Rupees notes and the ill-effects it was having on the Indian economy.

The group, which started as Demonetization-2016 was renamed as India Against Demonetization. A public protest was held on 29th January 2017 at Marine Drive to register probably the only public protest by any Indian against the decision to demonetize 83% of currency and putting emergency brakes on the Indian economy.

As the effects of demonetization are wearing off, group members decided to organize themselves into an association that will protect the fragile democracy that now exists in our country.
